Look in the Wabash River?

Another young college boy is missing from leaving a party early Sunday morning on the campus of Purdue University.
LINK TO STORY (Thanks, Vero, for the heads up.)
Wade Steffey certainly fits the profile of other young men found drowned in waterways in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana since the mid-90s. He's a little younger than the average age of 21 or college junior, but he's an athlete, an Eagle Scout and attending Purdue on a scholarship. Obviously, this isn't a kid who would "disappear" or leave town on a Greyhound headed to Las Vegas.
After researching the area around West Lafayette and Lafayette, Indiana, my first hunch is that Wayne is in the Wabash River, victim of a serial killer or copycat who recently made a possible appearance in his old stomping grounds, La Crosse. Wayne's body will be found with an unusually high alcohol level, he may have his wallet in his pants, and he will likely be missing some personal items. A hat or cell phone may be found on the banks of the river. And, ultimately, the autopsy will reveal that there was no "foul play."
I hope I'm wrong.
Comments
Isn't he a nice-looking young man?
I hope Brendan decides to go to college close to home.

i hope you're wrong too...i've been reading about this, the last couple of days...i wasn't aware there was a serial killer in & around that area....interesting....
btw, his name is Wade, not Wayne...

So sad about Denny Doherty passing away. Big fan of The Mammas and the Pappas.
Hi to everybody. Still having "computer freezing hiccups interruptus". At least now with IE 7.0

Ahh yes. Wade. I fixed it. Thanks. I spoke to someone who attended Purdue University and the river separates West Lafayette from Lafayette and has some nice walking bridges, etc. It's not been very cold this winter, so it's likely running fast.

Apparently, someone else had the same idea:

Here's a better link with a photo of the Wabash River.
I have a bad feeling about this.

It's very possible that there is a serial killer but it will be almost impossible to prove unless someone witnesses the act.

Good morning!
The pain his family is going through right now must be unbearable. I hope there is a resolution soon.
Thanks for all of the links.

If someone falls in one of those rivers in the north at this time of year, the cold alone could keep them from being able to save themselves even if they are completely sober. I was thinking about that today as the snow and sleet were falling and I was keeping myself safely inside my warm house.
I hope they find answers for the sake of family and friends.
Posted by: Barbara | January 21, 2007 05:56 PM
I have a question for anyone out there who might have an answer:
Students at our high school come to school on their birthday and have money pinned to their shirt. Presumably other students know that means it's their birthday and add to the money throughout the day.
Is anyone familiar with this practice and do you know where it came from? This has just been happening within the last 5 years or so.
Posted by: Barbara | January 21, 2007 06:07 PM
That was the custom among Latinos where I worked a few years ago. They did it to me, too. I would up with nearly $80 pinned to me.
You're not allowed to start it yourself. It has to be a family member or a friend who pins the first $.
Posted by: vero | January 21, 2007 08:22 PM
Hubby should be the first one to pin one on you today, Barbara.
Happy Birthday!
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 12:07 AM
Barbara's birthday! Holy cow!
Many happy returns, Barbara!
Posted by: vero | January 22, 2007 12:16 AM
LOL, Barbara. Kids at the high school I work at don't come to school at all on their birthday! I think I'm going to start a new tradition!

Happy Birthday to Barbara. I am pinning cyber $ on your cyber shirt. Actually, I am sending my best wishes for a wonderful year(pricless, right?).
Why is it always males who go missing at closing time? It's not like females in college towns don't bar hop. That is what makes this not random IMO.
Posted by: Peggy | January 22, 2007 12:15 PM
Peggy, happy to see you!
Happy Birthday, Barbara. Hope you have a wonderful day with big returns.
Posted by: Anne | January 22, 2007 12:29 PM
Thanks everyone! I don't have any money pinned to my shirt but I did have a big ol' piece of chocolate cake. And my dad called and left a message for me where he SANG "Happy Birthday" to me. Now THAT was priceless!

There's the Birthday Girl!
I hope you're enjoying your special day!

Peggy's post about all the drowning victims being male raises some interesting questions.
Happy Birthday, Barbara!
Posted by: Nadine | January 22, 2007 01:31 PM
Thanks for the link Captain Joe.
It sounds like the killer tried to strangle her and then perhaps used something close to fracture her skull.
Justice for Michelle and son.
Do you think they release the full autopsy report today?
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 01:36 PM
So far it's been a typical Monday. Lots of extra work and nothing is working the way it should. I probably should have stayed home.

Happy Birthday Barbara!
Here's a cyber hug to go with your cyber $$s.

A little overkill, anyone??
good gawd.
Posted by: loretta | January 22, 2007 02:13 PM
If it's possible, it makes me even madder that JY isn't cooperating with the investigation.
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 02:27 PM
I've been reading on this horrific murder case of Michelle Young. I also have the People issue on that story as well. Is it ever possible that Jason stands to collect $1 million--even if the LE don't yet consider him a suspect--yet? I would find it hard to believe that an insurance company is that naive to pay out until the LE can rule Jason ENTIRELY from any suspicion whatsoever.

Autopsy report online now.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 02:49 PM
Hey, Eric. Yeah, the insurance company will pay on it unless they conduct their own investigation.
They'd pay the death benefit pretty quickly, actually.
Posted by: loretta | January 22, 2007 02:50 PM
The autopsy report is linked on the RH side now.
The poor woman. She fought like h@ll.
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1175401/
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 02:50 PM
The hand wounds do not seem defensive to me. This poor woman was viciously attacked.
Overkill to say the least.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 03:09 PM
I take that back. Her hands were probably injured trying to cover her head. I was thinking palms but she probably tried to cover her head.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 03:10 PM
The stomach contained 70 gms of thick partially digested food.
Does anyone know anything about this with regard to determining TOD?
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 03:14 PM
Looks like I owe you a beverage, CG!
What flavor today?
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 03:16 PM
A little overkill, anyone??
HOLY SHIT
It is much worse than I imagined.
God Bless her soul, she fought her heart out!
There HAS to be DNA!
Posted by: Lesa | January 22, 2007 03:16 PM
Diet coke Doe. I'm so boring.
Lesa, it's horrible.
Notice though no injuries whatsoever on the right side of her head.
Either she was originally attacked as she was asleep facing left on her tummy -- or from behind and the perp was right handed. Horrible horrible injuries to the back of her head.
I discount the sleeping scenerio because it seemed she was fully clothed and not in PJs.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2007 03:19 PM
Oops, that was me ^^^.
I hope the hair isn't hers and it can help nail the perp.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 03:20 PM
It is horrible.
I'm with CG, I hope that hair and trace evidence from under her fingernails nails the perp.
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 03:25 PM
Another interesting thing.
Rigor: Not detectable
Any thoughts?
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 03:35 PM
The Digestive System
The digestive system and gut contents of a victim can provide important clues to the time of death of a victim. Chewed food will firstly pass through the oesophagus and then down into the stomach within seconds of the initial swallowing. After 3 hours, the food then leaves the stomach and heads toward the small intestines. 6 hours after eating a meal, the food will have traveled half way through the small intestines and begin moving through the large intestine. Where the victim's small intestine is empty, it suggests that the victim ate his or her last meal approximately 8 hours before death. The digestive process usually takes a bit more than a day, but it can be affected by sickness, liquid intake, fear or drug intake.
Pathologists also briefly note that correct level of food digestion corresponds to its location in the digestive system. In the rare case that a clever murderer wishes to delude investigators by attempting to bring forward the time of the victim's last meal (giving them an explanation for where they were at the victim's time of death), he/she may manually feed processed food (resembling that of chewed food) into the victim's stomach. If this is so, the food collected in the stomach will be much less digested than ennormal, since the periodic motion of the stomach stops after death. The food may indeed appear slightly broken down, due to the presence of the stomach acids, but any abennormalities are otherwise detectable. In older people or in those affected by the effects mentioned earlier (sickness, fear, drug/liquid intake), the efficiency of food digestion alters and it is left to pathologists to determine if the extent of the undigested food is great enough to suggest the mentioned scenario.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 03:38 PM
Rigor only lasts around 72 hours. All that means is by the time of her autopsy it was gone.
She really fought, didn't she? It's so sad.
Posted by: Abby | January 22, 2007 03:44 PM
From the wrist bruising and placement of the face and head wounds, It sounds to me like her attacker may have been holding her wrists with his left hand and punching her with his right. It sounds like she then fell face down and he hit her on the back of the head.
Posted by: Abby | January 22, 2007 03:49 PM
Hi, Abby!
The autopsy was done less than 24 hrs. after MF found her. 11:30 AM on 11-04-06. That's why I was wondering about the rigor.
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 03:50 PM
I feel so nauseated after reading this report and sorry for her seeing her end coming in a too much brutal way (not that any other way would be less condemnable).
Posted by: Anne | January 22, 2007 03:56 PM
I know, Anne.
It makes me sick to my stomach to think of what she went through.
Thanks for the info, CG.
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 04:00 PM
Perp broke her left jaw. Must be right handed.
Posted by: Captain Joe | January 22, 2007 04:14 PM
Doe, I hadn't realized the autopsy was done so soon after finding her. That is interesting. I guess the temperature inside the house could affect the length of time, but it still seems way off.
Posted by: Abby | January 22, 2007 04:16 PM
Stiffening of the corpse occurs between just 30 minutes and 3 hours after death. The process is called rigor mortis and occurs as the muscles in the body begin to stiffen from a lack of blood and oxygen. Rigor mortis first becomes apparent in the eyelids and jaws of the victim and spreads throughout the whole body in approximately 6 to 12 hours, before receding again after another 6 to 12 hours. Occasionally, stiffening of the body may not even occur if the surrounding temperatures are very low, while the process occurs a lot quicker in muscles that were quite active before death. Like body temperature, the evidence provided by the level of muscle stiffening becomes of little use after a long period since death.
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 04:31 PM
Well, that makes more sense- 12-24 hours.
That'll teach me to go with the first reference I find!
Thanks, CG.
Posted by: Abby | January 22, 2007 04:36 PM
That's probably why they put the TOD at between 12Mid-6am because she was in full rigor according to the 911 call.

Update here:

"You've got to think she suffered with the type of injuries described here. It's just a brutal murder," Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said. "You never get accustomed to (murder scenes) no matter how long you do it, but the first thoughts in my mind, did the little girl see this happened?"

I just have to say that I have had an awesome birthday. It started with a couple of phone calls (one from my dad and one from my special Cleveland friend) that wiped out all the frustrating work pathos and put my mind in a happy mood.
Then I got a card from my step-daughter that was blank on the inside until she wrote what she felt and it blew me away!
And then the card from my husband that had the sentiments already printed but it touched me to the bottom of my heart. They both could have stopped with the card. The presents were peripherals.
Except William's. He picked out a pair of slippers for me that are super cozy. I am wearing them now and loving my life. What more could I ask for?
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 07:43 PM
Oh! I forgot the e-card from a certain "moi". Delightful!
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 07:44 PM
Very funny stuff. I needed that, thanks!
Posted by: CountryGal | January 22, 2007 07:50 PM
It sounds like there's no way anyone could say Michelle's death was "accidental". As in, if someone were to confess, they couldn't say they didn't mean to kill her.
Posted by: Nadine | January 22, 2007 08:00 PM
Barbara, I'm so glad you had a wonderful birthday, Barbara!
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 08:01 PM
Heh. I was happy for you I had to post your name twice!
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 08:02 PM
That's just "fitting" because I got to hear it a lot tonight only it wasn't "Barbara", it was "Grandma".
And on the card from my step-daughter, "Mom" was one of the words on the card. If anyone is a step-mom, you know how much that means. She is a peach and I love being her "mom".
Loretta knows the back story so she can appreciate this even more.
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 08:07 PM
Barbara, it sounds like you've got this birthday thing down.
There are so many more important gifts than material things.
Posted by: Nadine | January 22, 2007 08:14 PM
That's so awesome!
Nadine, I totally agee with that. It was a brutal, 'personal' murder. IMO.
I was looking at the autopsy drawings of the injuries to the back her her head. One of them almost looks an imprint of a fireplace poker. The majority of them look like a cresent or a portion thereof. P East?
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 08:17 PM
I don't know. The slippers are material.
Although the gift-value of the slippers has nothing to do with the material. It's definitely the thought that counts in this case.
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 08:19 PM
If this murder was not committed by the husband (personal), it had to be committed by someone on drugs. And the druggie would have left massive clues. (Think Daniel Horowitz's wife) and he would be in jail right now. So I think the husband is the one and only killer in the case.
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 08:21 PM
I agree, Barbara. One killer.
Another thing that came to mind as a possible weapon is a framing hammer.
Posted by: Doe Eyes | January 22, 2007 08:36 PM
Happy Birthday, Barbara!
Posted by: Vix | January 22, 2007 08:36 PM
Thanks Vix!
There are any possible number of possibilities for weapons but we may never know. We never found out what was used in the P-east case.
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 08:39 PM
It looks like this rather than a hammer with a smooth head.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framing_hammer
Posted by: Doe | January 22, 2007 08:42 PM
She was beaten beyond what was necessary if someone just wanted to get a person out of the way. It looks like a rage killing to me. I think JY needs to pay the piper.
Posted by: Barbara | January 22, 2007 08:45 PM
Barbara, I had a similar thought. Based on the autopsy, I think the murderer must have had a lot of hatred for Michelle Young. The person who would have known her best and have been in the most consistent and close proximity would have been John Young.
Pay up, John-boy.
Posted by: Vix | January 22, 2007 09:04 PM
Agreeing with all that and the most loathsome ones are hilarious!
Yuck on that framing hammer. What a horrible thing. That kind of rage is bone-chilling and makes moi shudder in my shoes. One never knows what goes on behind closed doors when a sweet and dear family appears so "normal". Scares the dust bunnies out from under the bed. Krix.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2007 09:27 PM
yipes, that was moi.
Posted by: moi | January 22, 2007 09:30 PM
Lifting a glass of wine in your direction Barbara. You will have incoming cake and champagne as I do believe in the concept of a birthday week, or even month!
Posted by: moi | January 22, 2007 09:36 PM
I agree, Barbara and Vix.
I believe JY is the murderer. I really hope I'm wrong for Cassidy's sake.
The only reason I thought about the framing hammer was because of what was in a autopsy report. I won't elaborate because it's there for everyone to read. Just a thought though.
Hi, Moi!

Not a very heavy instrument
"Gnarley" murder weapon
Up to 30 blows, 20 or more on the head
Weapon had striations on it, "perhaps a flashlight kind of thing".

Gob-almighty a flashlight would take much more violent blows unless it was a maglite. shivers here. dang and shoot. brrrr and angst.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2007 11:29 PM
This makes me sick. 20 blows to the head! How awful! Must have been truly enraged.
Posted by: vero | January 23, 2007 12:23 AM
Happy birthday week to Barbara!
The autopsy report is chilling and terribly sad. I agree with the rage of a personal nature theory and the overkill.
I hope the DA is just playing it tight so there is no way JY can wriggle out when the boom comes down.
Posted by: Lisa | January 23, 2007 08:37 AM
I would be very surprised if it turned out to be anyone else. The one problem with all the publicity and dissection regarding the Peterson case is that these guys are learning to make it more difficult for investigators. Jason saw that SP made a mistake with the interviews, so he hasn't done any. He has also tried harder to get himself a viable alibi.
I can't see anyone else killing her with such rage and overkill, though.

I've just spent over 1 hour at thekotel.org. It was priceless. It is the website for the Western Wall in Jerusalem (Israel)with live WebCam.
I just watched (live) my nephew and his high-school friends arriving in Israel/Jerusalem, after travelling for almost 24h.
They left Sao Paulo yesterday and he called my sister as soon as they arrived in the airport in Tel Aviv and let her know that the group decided they were going directly to Jerusalem and to the Kotel (the Western Wall). She called me and we were watching it lively. No need to tell that I had some tears on my eyes, do I?
Small world. More and More.
(This is their graduation/end-of-school travel. It is the first time that a group of students decided to make this travel to a place so distant.)

Oh my, I have misquoted. Hammers are MASCULINE weapons so it is very likely the weapon of choice for the perp.

Greetings all.
I watched Baden on OTR last night, and read the autopsy report. With as many blows to the head MY had, there was rage, drugs, or both involved, IMO.
It's hard to imagine someone being so brutal as to strike someone in the head 20 time. The perp really wanted to make sure she was deal.
Does anyone know if JY had to submit to a DNA test?

Wonder if he complied?

Yes, IIRC he did comply. He showed up with his high priced attorney and they slipped out the back door.

Personally, I think Duncan needs to be in the general population and be everyone's best, well, you know. He needs to suffer, badly.
Wish they would do something in the JY/MY case, but I imagine they are playing it very close to the vest to avoid a Peterson syndrome.
Got the mail, Doe, and replied.

Yep, Nadine, there is a terrist around ever corner and then some. The decider has definitely gone mad and I am boycotting hymn.

I can't wait for him to talk about those nasty countries with NUKEELER weapons.

Yes, the least he could do is learn to pronounce the words he uses to "terrize" us with.

It's a shame he's so dangerous, because he really is funny. I think he missed his calling.

I can't watch the speech, not before dinner. Not afterward, either.
I'll have to read the transcript later. I'll tell you the State of our Union, it's gone to Heck in the proverbial handbasket, carried by the lunatic in charge.

Good evening!
Nadine, thanks for the link. I don't know quite what to think but I hope it's true and he's still alive.

Hi all!
I just read the Geragos story. When I got to the part about him meeting others under bridges I had a visual image of him appearing as a troll.
