Summer At Last

Here are some pictures of the second-longest day of the year from the house on the lake.

Our beach; there is a lot of driftwood that has washed up in recent stormy weather. The water is a little rough today, and I saw only a few lonely boats braving the waves.

The nearby fishing pier has some action. Let's take a closer look:

Some kids with mom playing on the pier. More pictures to come. It's such a photogenic place.

Late Spring Sunset on the Lake

Here are some shots I took recently from the beach. Ahhhh. Living on the lake in the winter is a bear; living here in the summer is heaven.

March Came In Like A Lion

Yes, this is Cleveland in March; typically horrific in terms of unwelcome snow, freezing wind, cold temperatures and bad driving conditions. However, there is something to be said for a crisp, blue sky and a frozen lake with silent white drifts that were once crashing waves.

Dr. N. Buster is going to weigh in on the Grant case as soon as she has time. Stay tuned.

Snowbound in Pleasantville

Last night we had a major blizzard that left us snowbound. I had to figure out how to manage the four foot drift that had settled in the middle of my driveway. With my new shovel that has only been used once this winter, I began to dig my way out.

IMG_0376.JPG

The "before" picture here gives you an idea of how much snow was in the driveway and all the way up the steps.

IMG_0378.JPG

No, I'm not a happy camper. This wicked wind was blowing north from the frozen lake and I had to keep switching gloves when my hands grew numb. Luckily, my ugly winter coat kept me warm and dry.

IMG_0382.JPG

Looking at this as a material handling project, I surveyed the depth and weight of the iceburg.

IMG_0384.JPG

Halfway done and I was running out of steam. I took a little smoke break and thawed out in the house. It was difficult going back out there, but in for a penny, in for a pound, eh? Besides, I still couldn't get my car past that major hump of snow.

Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

IMG_0385.JPG

Ahhh. Success. I had to soak in a hot bath to regain the feeling in my poor old bones. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea, because now I am in pain in places I haven't heard from in years.

Stay warm, everyone!

A Late Indian Summer

IMG_0202.JPG
Indian Summer Thanksgiving on the lakeside.

This year, unlike last year, we are having a genuine Indian Summer, when a spell of warm weather follows a frost. In this case, we had a month of frost in an unseasonably cold, wet October. Sunny days were rare and the foliage was a big disappointment. The weather in Cleveland is never anything to brag about, but we can usually rely on a nice October. Not this year.

We took advantage of the warm weather over Thanksgiving weekend to clear out the last of ten trees’ worth of leaves in my backyard. These aren’t wimpy, new trees, either. They are tall, leafy maples that blanketed my backyard like a crispy, brown snowfall. But, you won’t hear me complain even though I was a little stiff and bruised from the labor. If I have to do yard work, it means I have a yard.

The holiday season seems to begin earlier every year. I went to the grocery store today and the muzak was chirping some jazzy Christmas music. The ornaments, lights and cheesy paraphernalia were all on display, and the only thing missing was the Salvation Army Santa Claus. The thrust into the holiday trimmings felt rather odd when it was 60 degrees outside. This must be what it’s like to live in Florida. Without blizzards, bad drivers, slippery streets and lung-burning cold, I can’t quite get into that true Cleveland Christmas zone. Despite the tyranny of the commercial Christmas crunch, I refuse to put up my new pre-lit tree until there’s a number 12 on the calendar.

I bought a new snow shovel last month (I haven’t owned one in years) just to stave off the inevitable. So far, so good! You know if I didn’t have my ice scraper in the front seat and a shovel in the garage, we would have been buried in six inches already. You're welcome, neighbors.

The Gulls Next Door

Since the fall foliage is such a disappointment this year, the most interesting subjects for photos on the lakeside are the sea gulls. Thank heaven for little gulls -- without them what would little buoys do?

Autumn on the Lakeside

In what has become a blog tradition, allow me to offer some new shots taken this evening at near dusk that show some autumn foliage and interesting colors on the lakeside.

Later in the week, if we have another day without rain, I can get some good shots of big trees turning down by the park that will be much better.

A Rare Exquisite Day in Pleasantville

There are few days as beautiful as today on the shores of Lake Erie. Join me for some autumnal serenity as a momentary oasis from the chaos.
